‘Decentring the D’: A One-day Adventures Live! Festival

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the creation of the blog, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women. The blog was started in January 2009 by Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah and Malaka Grant, as a space for African Women to share their experiences of sex and their diverse sexualities. 

To celebrate this significant moment, we are organising the very first edition of Adventures Live! A one day festival at the Goethe-Institut in Accra to discuss African women’s pleasure and to focus on re-centring sex and sensuality where it is supposed to be: a space for full self-expression, rejuvenation, healing, excitement and love.  We are also organising a special party to round up the anniversary celebrations. 

The one-day festival taking place on the 16th of December 2019 will comprise of small intimate conversations, large panel discussions, art exhibitions and practical how-to workshops. These activities would collectively give purpose to the central theme of the event, “Decentring the D”. 

The co-organisers of this event are a diverse mix of feminists and allies who are deeply passionate about the rights of women, LGBTI and non-binary people. We are deeply invested in redefining narratives of sex and sexuality that focus on peoples fundamental right to exist with full ownership over their bodies. We centre pleasure and the continuous discovery of our most intimate selves as a radical act of self-love towards ourselves and our communities.  

The co-organisers of this event are: 

Caroline Kouassiaman is a human rights activist and the executive director of Initiative Sankofa D’afrique De L’ouest (ISDAO)

Famia Nkansa is a writer, poet, blogger and social commentator.

Fatima Derby is a feminist activist and a contributing writer on the blog, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women.

Jay-René Kouassiaman is a human rights activist who works closely with LGBQ and Trans and non-binary youth and adults of colour.

Kobby Ankomah-Graham is a writer, DJ, and lecturer who teaches numerous subjects across the fields of Communication and African Studies.

Malaka Grant is an author and co-founder of the blog, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women

Nana Akosua Hanson is a writer, actress, and activist, who was recently selected as an Obama Foundation leader in recognition of her feminist activism in Ghana.

Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah is a Ghanaian feminist writer and co-founder of the blog, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women

Rita Nketiah is a creative writer, academic and feminist, who has published in various outlets including This Is Africa, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women and Pambazuka.

Suhaidatu Dramani is a free-form creative writer, graphic design artist and the program coordinator of Drama Queens.
