This year marks the 10th anniversary of the creation of the blog, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women. The blog was started in January 2009 by Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah and Malaka Grant, as a space for African Women to share their experiences of sex and their diverse sexualities.
To celebrate this significant moment, we are organising the very first edition of Adventures Live! A one day festival at the Goethe-Institut in Accra to discuss African women’s pleasure and to focus on re-centring sex and sensuality where it is supposed to be: a space for full self-expression, rejuvenation, healing, excitement and love. We are also organising a special party to round up the anniversary celebrations.
The one-day festival taking place on the 16th of December 2019 will comprise of small intimate conversations, large panel discussions, art exhibitions and practical how-to workshops. These activities would collectively give purpose to the central theme of the event, “Decentring the D”.
The co-organisers of this event are a diverse mix of feminists and allies who are deeply passionate about the rights of women, LGBTI and non-binary people. We are deeply invested in redefining narratives of sex and sexuality that focus on peoples fundamental right to exist with full ownership over their bodies. We centre pleasure and the continuous discovery of our most intimate selves as a radical act of self-love towards ourselves and our communities.
The co-organisers of this event are:
Caroline Kouassiaman is a human rights activist and the executive director of Initiative Sankofa D’afrique De L’ouest (ISDAO)
Famia Nkansa is a writer, poet, blogger and social commentator.
Fatima Derby is a feminist activist and a contributing writer on the blog, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women.

As a new Relationship and Sex Coach, I am very excited about attending the event from South Africa!!
This is exciting to hear. Were you be planning a trip to Ghana or are you coming specifically because of this event?
Coming for the event. This is the type of event I one day hope to bring to my country.
Wow that makes me happy to hear. Please introduce yourself to any one of the organisers when you come and do let us know if you organise a similar event in SA.
This is fantastic and I am so happy I made it home (Ghana) just in time!!! I just registered and was willing to payooo, but it’s FREE and Fabulous. I am looking forward to hearing people in Ghana speak about sexuality in a nonjudgmental zone. We are currently experiencing LBGT talks on the media from religious and political sectors that are not in favor of any rights for this population. Funny enough I received a short clip of a Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi speaking about Igbo Woman (that had wives) you can find the video on Youtube (type Chimamanda Ngozi speech on Igbo woman). As a heterosexual female, I am not homophobic and really don’t care what others do with their God given anatomy for as long as they are honest with themselves and others!!!
Thanks so much, Leslie! I’m part of the crew helping to organize. So excited that you’re going to be home for this, and we are delighted to have you be a part of this conversation. We wanted to ensure that the space is accessible as possible, so it’s free, but we could still use your support!
