The Female Condom: My Non-Experience

 female condom

Lasy year I attended the International Aids Conference in Mexico and in my delegates bag were some female condoms. I was so excited! This was the first time that anyone had given me female condoms. Some of the exhibitors were also giving away female condoms. So, I stocked up. I had good intentions. I thought I would come home, practice how to use them and then use them…but somehow it never happenned, and they have stayed in my bag of toys.

It’s a shame. I will be the first one to agitate for more female controlled contraceptives and my FC’s sit in my drawer. The reasons why? Several, including:

  • At the time I acquired the FC’s my buddy and I were not using condoms consistently
  • I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to fit the FC properly
  • I felt too lazy to practice using  the FC on my own…I would have rather attended a workshop where I could have been shown how to use the FC or had an enthusiastic partner who would be like “Go on, let’s try it, it will be fun

What has been your experience of the female condom? How would you feel if your partner decided to use the female condom? Would you use the female condom

  • I once discussed the issue FC with my friends sometime back. The general comment was that is was just too repulsive. It looks like an extension of the lady’s vulva. and doesn’t give the couple too many choices to choose form with regard to the sex positions they can try out.

  • From your title, I had assumed that you had such a terrible experience with fcs that you thought to describe it a none-experience.

I am not sure female contraceptives have a place in the scheme of things. The idea seems akward to me. If there is a need for a contraceptive, why doesn’t the man just wear the thing?

Perhaps, a trial will convince (or confuse) me. Perhaps.

  • Interesting…kind of sad to think that something that is supposed to be empowering women everywhere ends up being cumbersome. Defeats the whole purpose! Time for a more appealing design perhaps?

  • @Edward, I know you didn’t mean to imply that a lady’s vulva looks repulsive. I am suprised that you believe the FC limits positions. I suspect the vaginal wall hold’s the FC in place…but hey I will have to do some practical research to give you proper feedback

@Mr Jones – No my experience with the FC has not been terrible, the challenge has been that I haven’t experienced using the FC to date for the reasons listed in my post. I think female controlled contraceptives are critical. Yes, do try the FC and let us know what you think

@Abena – Hmmm, I am not sure if it is cumbersome thought ‘cos I still don’t know. I wonder if any of the readers of this blog have tried the FC. If so please enlighten us all.

  • Actually, i think I like FCs as much as the male condoms. I just don’t use it as often because Mr. Man always beats me to it :).

It really does work well with all positions. Only drawback in my opinion is clean up with FCs compared to male condoms could get a bit messy depending on the position eg. woman on top. At the same time it cuts down clean up time for the guy with other positions eg. missionary and allows a seamless transition into erm..round 2 or …(fill-in the blanks activity). But it will not slip out, just and like Nana said the vaj wall does hold it in place so you have nothing to worry about. And hey ,you and your partner can make it a fun activity and both participate in the ‘wearing’

@ Abena, I guess I think both male condoms and FCs can be cumbersome, really esp if you are nervous, anxious, impatient etc etc. I had that feeling about protection in general because in the heat of the moment one has to pause all the excitement and reach for condom and peel & retrieve and then finally roll on to or insert it, wit all your ‘bisnis’ in plain view and it can get really awkward & kill the mood…but don’t take it too seriously though. Using condoms are not natural but in our world today we don’t have a choice and such so having a laid back attitude about it & making it fun will make it easier to incorporate.

  • @ Ifeoma – YAY!!! I am very excited to get feedback from someone who has actually used the FC. Lol at Mr Man beating you to it. Thank you.

  • I’m worried of slippage plus an embarrassing trip to the ER to have ER hunt around with tweezers after it goes AWOL!
